There is becoming an increasing wage gap between the rich and the poor. Globalization has lead to increased outsourcing which will only increase this gap. This increased wage gap will increase social cohesion throughout cultures because more people will feel that society provides them with fewer opportunities and that social protection for the less wealthy is diminishing. Education can provide a solution only if it is equitable. In order to do this, education will have to provide equal educational quality, equal access and equal outcomes for everyone.

Interdependence on other countries for merchandise has grown rapidly since 1950. Low skilled tasks are often subcontracted out to China and India. This creates a labor cost differential that is so large that several OECD countries have to adjust their economies to the new situation. If economies have to adjust rapidly to the changing needs of the world distribution of labor the market must be flexible. Enterprises should also have the ability to adjust their workforces as rapidly as possible to the new situation. Due to this change, people will have to update their knowledge and skills more often. People in these economies will also be expected to change jobs more often. In order to move with this change, education systems will need to create students who are flexible, creative, able to learn and relearn, have the capacity to learn independently, digital literacy and the ability to develop networking.

    ...
Changes in the workplace will ultimately result in fewer available jobs. However, this will increase the opportunity for individuals to freelance or become an entrepreneur.
Adjustments have already been made in the workplace. However, the real changes have just begun. Cheng must ask the fundamental question, “If this is the society into which our students are entering upon graduation, are we adequately preparing them for successful integration?” (cited by Suárez-Orozco, p. 180). Education is being challenged fundamentally. The prevailing paradigms of industrial-era educational systems must also be examined and reformed accordingly.
TIM YOUR PART GOES HEREThe author talks about how educational systems are almost a screening for individuals to enter society. It talks about how when people graduate they all acquire different credentials that typically determine and justify their position in the social hierarchy. As a result of this, education is seen as function in society to screen and select individuals to fall into different positions in this social structure.
There are a few assumptions related to this. The first assumption is: that there are smart kids and dumb kids. The second assumption is: that a student’s intelligence is measured by knowledge, often in terms of amount of knowledge. The third assumption is: that the qualification pyramid in education exactly matches the manpower pyramid in society.
These assumptions can be challenged in several ways. Society has progressed and more individuals need post and secondary training or education. Employers that usually employ poorer performing students are becoming less prevalent. In Hong Kong, people in their forties and fifties are losing their jobs because their credentials no longer match what is needed to perform in the work environment. The schooling they had 20 or 30 years ago has not prepared them for the new requirements of the work place. Lastly community colleges appear to providing a real alternative route for students who have been failed by the conventional school systems.
There is a widely accepted belief in the value of specialization in education. These beliefs are based on several assumptions. One assumption is that human beings should be classified, and such classification is reflected in people's occupational identities. The next assumption is that knowledge is divided, and people who possess such knowledge are divided accordingly. The next is that the degree of specialization also indicates a person's intellectual level.
The book then talks about how a change in society can change the need for specialization. In today's society there is a need for specialized task but not for specialized people. Employees are now more required to move across disciplines and knowledge domains. Occupational identity does not have a lifelong meaning anymore, in more contemporary society people are more likely to pass through several careers.
Today it is quite common for individuals to vary in their training and profession. Schools are changing to keep up with this change. Many schools are now lowering their major requirements and are delaying specialization until the later years of schooling. This is to give students a broader range of learning to aid them to be more flexible and adaptable in today’s changing society.

Because of movements toward school effectiveness and measures to ensure school quality, standardized tests are the way to assess student performance and school quality. In this country it is believed that schools need to educate students in the classroom because activities outside of the classroom are not as effective or are not a real form of learning. In addition to the belief that students cannot learn much outside of the classroom, numerous school systems do not have the support needed for these kinds of activities.
There are a few assumptions that people hold about academic study (education in the classroom). The first assumption is the purpose of education is to get formal qualifications and it is ok if other types of learning take a backseat. The second assumption is students who excel academically automatically succeed in most other areas in life. Therefore, academic performance is directly linked to human ability. The last assumption is exams are the only reliable way to measure academics. If something is difficult to measure it simply is not measured.

"Globalization and Education: Can the World Meet the Challenge?"
By Bernard HugonnierThis chapter talks about how globalization has brought about changes in education. The number of students who venture abroad for their studies has increased dramatically over recent years, in fact more than 2.2 million people studied abroad last year. This has increased the interest of universities to increase their foreign campuses rapidly. Many of these universities have adopted partnerships with foreign institutions. Globalization brings about economic and cultural change. These changes pose five challenges for education.
Interdependence on other countries for merchandise has grown rapidly since 1950. Low skilled tasks are most often subcontracted out to China and India. This creates labor cost differential that is so large that several OECD countries have to adjust their economies to the new situation. If economies have to adjust rapidly to the changing needs of the world distribution of labor the market must be flexible and enterprises should have the ability to adjust their workforces as rapidly as possible to the new situation.
Globalization is leading to similar cultural traits around the world. Technology is speeding up this transition. Our societies are becoming multicultural and this is due to international migration. There is an implied social contract in most countries that receive immigrants. The republican school of thought can affect immigrant education negatively. Immigrants are expected in this view to make every effort to learn and we are to provide them with the same quality education as the nationals. This poses a problem because most immigrants want their culture represented in the schools they are attending. This can cause some immigrants to reject their learning and or become resentful towards their host country. Native born students often score higher on tests than foreign born students. Instead of using the republican school of thought approach schools will have to integrate some of the other school’s cultures into their own. This would lessen the immigrant’s fears of losing their roots or cultural identity. This would also enrich the culture of the host country. Education will also have to teach students to value and accept differences in society.
There is becoming an increasing wage gap between the rich and the poor. Globalization outsourcing will only increase this gap. This will increase social cohesion because more people will feel that society provides them with fewer opportunities and that social protection for the less wealthy is diminishing. Education can provide a solution only if it is equitable. In order to do this, education will have to provide equal educational quality, equal access and equal outcomes for everyone.
When we become citizens of the world we inherit all of its problems. With globalization there needs to be united citizen accountability and not just a national accountability. In order to do this the book claims we will have to raise global consciousness and make all citizens aware of the world problems. Education can help educate our youth on what is going on around the world to make them aware so we can work together as a whole.
Higher education is becoming internationalized. The growth of higher academic institutions has brought about new ways to deliver education. Online classes, foreign campuses, and for-profit providers are examples of this. In order to insure these new institutions deliver quality curriculums, accreditation bodies has risen also. The problem with this picture is that these bodies focus entirely on national delivery systems and not on international systems. This can lead students who get their education internationally to have a low quality education. This problem can be solved by having accreditation bodies go to global range as opposed to a domestic. The accreditation bodies will need to co-operate so they can set unified set standards to ensure that students have equal quality education.
